Do you keep your makeup routine simple? Or do you go all out? It seems that everyone has a different makeup routine depending on the time they have to get ready.
So, you might be wondering: how long does it take to do makeup?
The amount of time it takes us to do our makeup depends on various factors. I’ve found out that people usually have a 5-minute, 30-minute, or over 45-minute makeup routine.
Everyone does makeup differently, so the amount of time they take to do makeup will differ as well. But keep reading to find out what some typical makeup routines might look like!
5 Minutes Makeup
Can’t be bothered to wear a full face of makeup because of a busy schedule? Or simply running short on time? Then just master the art of a quick five-minute or less makeup routine!
This routine will take five minutes at most since you just need to do the basics. Here are the minute-by-minute steps:
Minute 1: Prep your skin for makeup.
I’m sure you already know by now that a good moisturizer (with SPF) and a primer is a must-have.
Minute 2: Skip foundation and reach for a tinted moisturizer.
Tinted moisturizers aren’t full coverage, but they will give you smooth and even skin. Since tinted moisturizers offer less coverage, they are easier to blend than foundation. That’s why you will save more time by using tinted moisturizers.
Minute 3: Conceal imperfections and add blush.
Apply concealer to areas of concern – dark circles, discoloration, blemishes, etc. Make sure to blend carefully.
Plus, make sure to apply blush to the apples of your cheek. It’s going to add a pop of color to your skin, making you look fresh and awake!
Minute 4: Fill in your brows. And apply a generous coating of mascara.
This one is optional since I know some of you already have naturally full brows. But if you don’t, just brush your eyebrows up and fill in only where needed. Low maintenance brows are trendy nowadays so you don’t have to spend much time on them!
And don’t forget to apply a few strokes of mascara! It’s going to give your lashes the extra oomph and make sure that you look wide awake.
Minute 5: Finish with your favorite tinted lip balm or lip gloss.
Lipstick takes a little longer to perfect, so tinted lip balm or lip gloss is a quicker option.
That’s it! You’re done! But feel free to add your own steps to customize your everyday look!
So, what do you think? It’s pretty simple, right? This routine is perfect for the “no makeup” makeup look. It will give you the lit-from-within glow!
When you’re in a pinch for time, try out this routine!
30 Minutes Makeup
If you have more time to spare and want to put on a full face of makeup, then a 30-minute routine is what you need!
Prep your skin with moisturizer and primer. Then, apply your foundation with a brush or sponge for an airbrushed look. Make sure to blend carefully.
This is how the five-minute routine started out, but you’re using foundation here instead of tinted moisturizer.
Conceal problem areas with your favorite concealer! Then, make sure to lock in your makeup so far with a setting powder. After that, you can apply blush or bronzer.
Setting powder is a key step here! It will make sure that your foundation and concealer won’t melt off throughout the day.
If you want a flush of colors on your cheeks, reach for a blush. If you want a sun-kissed glow, reach for a bronzer. If you have a tan or dark skin tone, you can even layer on bronzer on top of the blush.
You need to highlight and contour to add depth and dimension to your face.
Tip: Apply highlighter along the top of your cheekbones, on the bridge of your nose, and on the cupid’s bow. These are the areas that the sun naturally hits.
Apply eyeshadow primer and eyeshadow. Then, apply eyeliner and mascara. You can also wear false eyelashes, but that’s optional.
Eyeliner can be a bit tricky, so this might take a while. But practice makes perfect!
Fill in your eyebrows.
Tip: Use a gel brow product. And don’t forget to brush up.
Outline your lips with a pencil and fill them in with your lipstick. And finally, finish up with a finishing powder and a setting spray.
Lip liner and lipstick are needed if you want your lips to look fuller and plumper!
Also, finishing powder is needed to lock your makeup in place all day long.
And there you have it! Your game face is on!
45 Minutes – 1 Hour Makeup
If you just want to take it slow, a 45 minutes to 1-hour makeup routine is suitable for you. This “routine” is basically the same as the 30 minutes one. The only difference here is that you can do everything at your own pace.
No need to rush! You can meander between steps by pausing for a coffee, listening to music, texting friends, etc.
We all need a break from a fast-paced way of life. And makeup application can be a relaxing and even therapeutic process if you just take your time.
What are the absolutely necessary steps in each routine?
I would say that there are only a few steps that’s absolutely necessary.
The most indispensable step is the first one – prep your skin with moisturizer and primer. This step is necessary since it will provide you with a smooth base for the rest of your makeup.
And always try to make sure that your moisturizer has at least SPF 30. If not, just apply sunscreen after moisturizer.
Another step that’s necessary is the concealer step. I personally think that concealer is a can’t-live-without product. You can skip foundation, but don’t skip concealer! It’s the product that does all the heavy-lifting to make sure that your skin looks flawless.
And last but not least, the tinted lip balm, lip gloss, or lipstick step is a must! Any lip product is a go-to item since they can quickly pull your look together.
What steps can I avoid if I want?
That’s completely up to you!
For instance, you can avoid doing your brows if you already have naturally full brows. You can even skip foundation and just go with a concealer if you want a more natural look. You can also avoid highlighting and contouring since those aren’t a must.
Anyways, there are no hard and fast rules about what steps you can skip. My best advice would be to avoid the steps that aren’t necessary to make your skin look amazing.
Makeup routine is personal. Everyone does makeup differently, so there is no perfect answer to the question of “how long does it take to do makeup?”
But I hope you were able to see what some typical makeup routines might look like. Whether you take 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour, I’m sure the result is amazing!
